A salon manicure is by far one of the best “me time” indulgences, however it’s not always possible to float on down to your favorite nail spa when you need a good filing or foot scrub. That means our at-home arsenal of must-haves for beautiful hands and feet should be stocked with the right tools to keep our nails looking healthy and well manicured. Here are the three nail products you might not have considered as necessary, but make a world of difference.
1. A glass nail file
While a cardboard emery board may have cut it in your 20s, as our nails age and get more brittle, we need a file that protects the structure of our nails. A glass or crystal nail file is gentler and seals the keratin layers together at the tip of the nail, which prevents that awful peeling and chipping. Glass files are also much more hygienic as they can be sanitized by simply washing them in hot, soapy water. The Sephora Collection Crystal Nail File ($10) will do the trick perfectly.
2. Foot scrub
We exfoliate our faces to get rid of dead skin cells, but we often forget about regular exfoliation for the rest of our body—especially the feet. Foot calluses on your heels and toes can develop from daily workouts and wearing your favorite fashionable, yet less-than-comfortable shoes. That’s were a great foot scrub comes in hand. The Lush Stepping Stone ($4.50) has pumice and sea salt to slough away dry, hard skin and contains lemon and lime oils that help to deodorize.
3. Bright, bold nail polishes
Neutral and soft nail polish colors are nice, but if you want to camouflage the look of aging hands, then bright, bold colors are best. “Beige tends to make the hands look older, but a gorgeous color on the nails steals all the attention and makes a statement,” says CND style director Jan Arnold. Estée Lauder Nail Lacquer in Coral Cult and Narcissist ($20) offer a punchy pop and are perfect for spring.
