Don’t be mistaken, we’re fragrance enthusiasts. Does that mean our brains or noses can comprehend the addition of over 1,000 new fragrances to the market in 2011 alone? No, not really. Just thinking about it gives us a headache.
Fragrances of the World, the annually revised book of fragrances, or bible as the authors like to to call it, just added 1,200 new scents from 2011 for the new 2012 edition. That means that on average, 100 fragrances were launched each month this year, three a day. As a point of distinction, only 76 fragrances were launched in the entire year of 1991, publisher and fragrance expert Michael Edwards told Basenotes.
So why is there such a flood of fragrances hitting the shelves and confusing our senses? You can thank the limited edition scents and influx of celebrity branded perfumes, says Edwards.
Before you hit the department store to start smelling them all, keep in mind, you can only sniff three different fragrances without confusing your sense of smell, says Edwards. Less if you smell similar scents.
