The first step in finding the right liquid liner is doing the smudge test. You know the one. You end up leaving the makeup store with what looks like a collection of tribal marks on the back of your hand.  But for waterproof liners, the smudge-proof test isn’t so easy to do in the store. You can’t really test how the liner will stack up to inclement weather, sweat, watery eyes or a nonstop cryfest without the water.

Luckily Reddit user xcxo put three popular liquid liners to the test to see how long they really last in a rub and smudge test after submerging them under water. In the battle of which one actually does what it says it does, of the NYX Cosmetic Collection Noir Liquid Liner ($6), Kat Von D Tattoo Liner ($20) and Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner ($22), only two survived.  One noticeable difference between the three liners besides price, is that the NYX liner has a brush tip while the Kat Von D and Stila liner have a felt tip. There may not be a correlation between that and the durability of each one, but it’s an important note.

Unfortunately, the more affordable NYX liner didn’t fare as well as the other two. Although all three liners withstood the smudge test when dry, the NYX liner lost a chunk when the liners were put through the same test after going under water. A few Reddit commenters chimed in to back up the results of the test. User roadtohealthy said, “I tried out the NYX because it was so much cheaper than my KVD liner. However, the NYX performed the same on my eye as it did in your swatches. It looked ok to start with and then chunks of it started flaking off…I’m back to KVD which reliably works for me”

Another user, sabrunka, wrote, “I have used this liner and even though it lasts well on the hand, I notice on the eyes that it will slowly vanish away. I don’t see flakes or smears, but parts of my wing will just be missing. I have yet to find something better than Stila’s black liner!”

So, how does your favorite waterproof liquid liner stand up to the test?
