Curling Your Eyelashes With Fire Is Now a Trend featured image

A beauty technique from Korea is giving a new meaning to the saying “beauty means pain.” Enter: curling your lashes with fire.

This beauty innovation from Korea is, apparently, the secret to curled, lush eyelashes that last much longer than when curled with a traditional eyelash curler. Note: While the flame is not directly applied to lashes, the stick that is applied to the lash line is, indeed, heated with a flame. It sounds complicated, but is pretty simple in nature. Here’s how it works:

A small stick (think a toothpick, metal mascara wand or a Q-tip with the ends cut off) is heated by a fire. Once it’s been warmed, the stick is then tapped against your hand for a few seconds to cool it down before applying it to your lashes. Once cooled, the stick is “wiggled” up into your lashes as if you are applying mascara, and voila! An all-day curl is created. See for yourself here.

While this technique is super similar to using your blowdryer to heat up your eyelash curler before using it, this method lasts much longer (with the downside of a posed safety threat, of course). According to New York ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeon Irene Gladstein, MD, this technique poses more than one safety risk. “While heat is an established and proven modality to style hair (think how boring life would be without curling or flat irons), it is, in my opinion, simply too dangerous to utilize this technique near the eye,” she explains, outlining some of the complications pertaining to eyelash heat damage as including structure changes, dryness, decreased growth, breakage, etc. “Most importantly, though, we need to focus on more dangerous issues such as possible thermal injury to the skin of the eyelids, or even the cornea. Overall, I would advise against this technique as the potential risks, in my opinion, overweigh the benefits.”

While we’re all for forgoing conventionality for the sake of beauty, we’re unsure about this trend. Would you be brave enough to try it out?
