We know about all the major ways that you can get wrinkles, like sun exposure, lack of sleep and aging in general. But did you ever imagine that you could also get wrinkles from little habits like chewing gum? After hearing this rumor, we decided to contact Smithtown, NY, dermatologist Marina Peredo, MD, to set the record straight.

While chewing gum doesn’t necessarily cause wrinkles, Dr. Peredo says that smoking and drinking through straws can create lines around the lips. To avoid this, skip the straw and drink from the glass instead.

“Some other ways you can get wrinkles without realizing it are sitting by the window indoors without sunblock, loosing a lot of weight, and sleeping with your face down,” she says. Sleeping with your face down can cause lines to form on your cheeks, forehead, and chest…and they are very hard to treat.

When it comes to keeping wrinkles at bay, Dr. Peredo says it’s all about prevention. “Use full spectrum sunblock that will provide UVA and UVB protection that is at least SPF 30 and has zinc oxide. It’s also important to have a good diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables that will provide good antioxidants. Avoid things that are bad for you, such as tanning salons, smoking, drinking alcohol and going to sleep with your makeup on.” She also suggests avoiding alcohol based cleansers and astringents because they irritate and dry out your skin and can cause it to wrinkle.
