I’ve always lived by the credo, “If ya got it, flaunt it.” But what if ya just don’t got it? In that case, I say, fake it.

Such was the case last week when I was contemplating how I could make my fair skin tanner and ready for a night out on the town; but I didn’t want to go down the bronzer or traditional self-tanner route for fear of being streaky and uneven. My saving grace: spray tanning in the hands of an experienced professional.

After some helpful tips, it became quite clear that a pre-treatment exfoliant was a must in order to properly prime my skin. Unsure about which product would do the trick, I asked a fellow beauty editor for some recommendations. Her top pick, the Liz Earle Energising Body Scrub, was just what I needed to gently buff away dead skin cells that would have otherwise compromised my skin’s ability to completely absorb the pigment in the tanning solution.

With a stimulating scent that reminded me of freshly cut grass, the scrub lived up to its name, invigorating the senses, sloughing away dead, dull cells and leaving behind supple, soft skin.

The experience was enhanced tenfold with a dose of sunless, UV-free tanning, whereby a spay-tan pro airbrushed a self-adjusting bronze solution over my body. The solution darkened overnight, reacting with the proteins in my skin and developing into a personalized golden hue all my own. The best part? The tan lasted a good five days, giving me a subtle hint of color that left others asking, “You look good-did you do something different?”

Unfortunately for them though, I have always lived by another credo: a good magician never shares her secrets. Of course, there are always exceptions to every rule.
