The Secret Behind A Week-Long Blowout

There are two types of people in the world: Those that give me that baffled-borderline-horrified look when I tell them “I haven’t washed my hair in days” and those that get it. It’s not that it’s something I go around bragging about, but, when you get a good blowout you will do anything in your power to make it last, and, when it doesn’t, it’s just a downright letdown.

Lately, my blowouts have been going bust by the second day. They look great for the first few hours, but by the time I wake up the next morning, my hair is oily, limp and just not looking anywhere that falls remotely into the realm of “good.” I tried everything: loose buns at bedtime, dry shampoo on the roots in the morning, not using any styling products whatsoever-but nothing positive was coming out of the mix.

But three weeks ago, I finally got it right. Call it a serious series of trial-and-error, but this cocktail kept my hair in tip-top post-blowout shape for five straight days (with days six and seven delivering a bouncy ponytail that was still presentable):

First, I washed with Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner. It leaves hair feeling kind of “thick” without a lot of slip, so I was worried it wouldn’t produce smooth results, but it totally did. Next, my hairdresser applied TIGI Bed Head After Party, a really lightweight cream that promises extra-shine, and the blow-drying began. By the time we were done, I had a head full of bouncy, shiny hair. Three days later, I still had it. By day four, my hair was starting to flatten out a bit (but it wasn’t greasy), so I sprayed T3 Orlando Pita Dry Conditioner through the roots to revive it. By day five, I was starting to feel weird about not washing, so I spritzed my hairline with Avène Thermal Spring Water and used a Q-Tip to dab my scalp; it sounds strange, but it worked and left it feeling clean. Like I mentioned above, days six and seven saw the ponytail, but it wasn’t a “just throw my hair off my face” sort of look. Day eight found me starting over again, trying the same routine as the week before; the surprising news is that it worked equally as well on the second go, so it wasn’t just a fluke.
