Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, can offer substantially dramatic results on your overall look. But it’s important to understand what the surgery can and cannot provide in terms of results. If your expectations are unrealistic or you are not a good candidate for the procedure, you may not be happy with the outcome and the benefit may not necessarily outweigh the risks. We broke down the pros and cons.
The Pros:
1. Can bring balance and harmony
Chevy Chase, MD, facial plastic surgeon Shervin Naderi, MD, says rhinoplasty can take away any distractions caused by a disproportionate nose and bring balance and harmony to the face.
2. Helps alleviate breathing problems
When the nose is deviated, collapsed or turbinated, breathing can be difficult. Straightening out the nose makes it easier to breathe.
3. Positively impacts self-image and self-confidence
“Small changes to the nose can make a big impact and boost self confidence,” says Richmond, VA, facial plastic surgeon Michael Godin, MD.
The Cons:
1. Thicker skin can hide nasal flaws
The thicker and more sebaceous the skin is, the more difficult it can be to achieve the desired results.
2. A single surgery can only provide so much improvement
According to San Francisco facial plastic surgeon David W. Kim, MD, rhinoplasty only permits a certain degree of change to be made.
3. Too much can’t be changed at once
If the bone or cartilage is manipulated to a certain point it may try to return to its inherent positioning. This is why secondary surgeries may be needed.
