Many women are unhappy with the weakness of their abdominal muscles after pregnancy. Even those who are very active and in great shape complain about a protruding stomach. The tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) that I perform addresses this specific complaint by tightening and returning the abdominal muscles to their pre-pregnancy form.
I first tighten the muscle with running continuous, permanent sutures when the patient is lying flat on the operating table. Then, when we reposition the patient into a 45-degree angle, sitting upright (which I call the “table tilt test”), if any abdominal bulging is noticeable, I then tighten a second or third layer so the muscle is absolutely flat. By finessing my abdominoplasty in this manner, I am able to achieve a very good result.
I also address the belly button, which can become larger and bulgy post-pregnancy. I repair its appearance by making a V-shaped incision with stitches on the inside of the bellybutton.
