If you are unhappy with your nose, rhinoplasty can significantly upgrade your appearance—making you look better and younger. Ten or 15 years ago, rhinoplasty was more about just size reduction and not as much about support. “The poorly supported nose may have looked great six months or one year out, but the results weren’t holding up long-term because the nose lacked support,” says Chicago facial plastic surgeon Dean M. Toriumi, MD. “We’ve seen a surge in the use of cartilage grafts that add strength and support so that the rhinoplasty results have increased longevity.” Cartilage grafts not only re-orient the tissue, but the added support is thought to allow the nose to age better than if surgery was not performed at all. “Contemporary rhinoplasties often involve trimming bone or cartilage where it is excessive and adding tissue where there is a deficit. That results in more balanced natural-appearing results,” says La Jolla, CA, plastic surgeon Robert Singer, MD.
