The trend of sexy, flowy curls is a celebrity hairstyle staple. Whether you like to wear yours with more of a beachy twist, or more classic and smooth, we got the inside scoop from Rusk’s platform artist Sherri Jessee, who has created perfectly curled looks for celebrities like Nancy O’Dell. 1. Blow dry hair in sections to stretch the hair out from the root. “You also don’t want to make the hair poker-straight—you want to preserve some of the volume, an important element in getting sexy-looking curls,” Jessee says. 2. Now that your hair is dry (make sure it is completely dry), section hair into one-and-a-half-inch sections. Not sure whether to use a curling iron or hot rollers? “A curling iron will make the hair look softer and it will last longer. Hot rollers give more body but not a lot of curl—plus, the look won’t have as much staying power.” 3. Spray a heat protecting spray like Rusk Being Sexy (it smells good, always a bonus) to each section. Then, taking your iron—make sure it’s not too hot otherwise you’ll scorch your hair—start half way down the hair and curl hair in a vertical pattern. Jessee says to “stretch” the curl out so that it doesn’t look so contrived. “For more of a beachy look, don’t curl the ends of the hair.” 4. Repeat step three over the entire head. 5. Once you’ve curled all your hair, flip your head over and loosely tousle and shake it. 6. Finally, spray with a good hairspray to lock in your style.
