Despite all the education that’s out there about dermal fillers and how to get the most natural look, there are still cases where patients end up unhappy with their results. But, the type of filler you have injected will determine whether or not your results can be undone.

When it comes to hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane, Perlane, Juvéderm and Voluma, the effects can easily be “reversed” with hyaluronidase if you’re unhappy with the end result. Prospect, KY, dermatologist Tami Cassis, MD, says hyaluronidase is injected to dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers and the results are usually seen within a day or two. The most common reason for reversing the results of filler is improper placement of the product. “If it has been injected too superficially in the skin, it can leave behind a lump, a bump or a bluish tint,” she says.

However, longer-lasting collagen-stimulating fillers like Sculptra Aesthetic and Radiesse are not reversible and can’t be treated with hyaluronidase. The same goes for silicone, permanent fillers and any others that aren’t FDA-approved. “Semi-permanent fillers may be able to be treated with steroids or lasers, or by cutting the filler out—those are really the only options. This can take several months to see a result and it doesn’t always work. Permanent fillers are next to impossible to reverse, especially those that are fat or silicone,” says Dr. Cassis.

The best way to avoid needing your fillers reversed is by only opting to receive treatment from a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon who has plenty of experience with injectables and has the proper knowledge about facial anatomy to perform the procedures.
