Just In Time for The Beach, Here’s The Modern-Day Sun-In

By ·

Sun-In was my absolute summer beauty staple in the late ’80s/early ’90s. I was witness to some very, very bad incidences with it and could spot someone who had gone overboard (hello, orange!) from a million miles away, but for some dumb-luck reason, this is probably the first product that just worked for me. I would enter June with mousy-brown hair; come September, I sported strands of gold and blond that I always prayed would at least last until school picture day.

Today, if I used it, I am quite certain my hair would immediately turn to burning straw and break off in a blaze of ghastly glory. My hair is too frizzy and too fried and I spend too much time and money on covering my grays and getting highlights every few weeks that I cannot fool around. But of course, the temptation from my teenage days has not completely disappeared.

That’s why when I saw Klorane’s new Sun-Lightening Spray, I had to have it. I squirreled it away for a few weeks, only breaking it out while I was on vacation and had both the luxury of not needing to be anywhere for a few days and having the time to lay out by the pool (plus, I was a week out from a hair color appointment, so I knew I had the troops to back me up if sometime went totally awry).

For starters, the smell of the spray is super nice—a sort of light floral, almost honey-ish fragrance. You can put it on wet or dry strands and it actually feels like it’s hydrating them and making them softer—not drying them out to remove all the color.

I put in a few spritzes, brushed it through and let Mother Nature do her magic. I wouldn’t say I had a whole new head of highlights, but after wearing it for three days, I would definitely say my color just looked better and shinier and had a little bit more “summer” in it, minus any trip to the salon.
