“Mad Men” may be an American television show, but its influence apparently stretches across the pond. This is especially true in regard to one of the show’s beautiful breakout stars, Christina Hendricks, who is being credited with boosting breast augmentation among British women.
The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) released their latest statistics, including a 10% jump in breast augmentation in 2010. The economy hasn’t improved dramatically, so what could be fueling the surge in surgery?
Christina Hendricks, according to BAAPS sources.
“The Christina Hendricks effect is significant,” one source told the British press. “No one believes any more you have to be stick thin to be beautiful.”
Even a member of parliament, Lynne Featherstone, is a big fan of the curvy actress.
“Christina Hendricks is absolutely fabulous,” Featherstone said last year. “We need more of these role models.”
If she really is the driving force behind a breast-implant boom, Hendricks may be more disturbed than flattered by news of women wanting to surgically alter their appearance to look more like her. In addition to her breasts reportedly being natural, she has often spoken of her struggle with body acceptance.
“I’ve always had boobs and hips, even when I was 115 pounds. And here I am, much heavier than when I was modeling, and all of a sudden people are giving me positive feedback,” Hendricks told Page Six in 2008. “Sure, I’d be happier with 10 pounds off-wouldn’t every woman? But at the same time, when I looked at myself in those red carpet pictures, I thought, ‘Oh my God, I looked beautiful.’ I didn’t tear myself apart.”
