For those who want to banish belly fat but don’t know the best way to go about it, the verdict is in: aerobic activity is the answer. Researchers from Duke University Medical Center found that aerobic exercise (like jogging) is more effective than weight training or a combination of the two, to lose the belly fat that’s most threatening to your health. This unhealthy fat found in the abdomen is known as visceral fat and is linked to an increased risk in heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.
The eight-month study published in the American Journal of Physiology examined 196 overweight, sedentary adults from ages 18 to 70, assigning them to regulated aerobic activity, resistance training or a combination of the two.
The people in the aerobic group significantly reduced visceral and liver fat, notably improving factors that lead to diabetes and heart disease. These positive results were not present with those in the resistance-training group although in the combination group-results were similar to the aerobic group.
The study found that aerobic exercise burned 67 percent more calories than resistance training, making cardio the obvious workout for someone overweight.
