In America, a woman is assaulted every nine seconds. That fact makes domestic violence the leading cause of injury to women. Whether it’s a broken nose, a fractured cheekbone or even just a bruise, these types of injuries can be both emotionally and physically life altering for women.

For 45-year-old Kay Ziv, domestic abuse almost claimed her life. After being beaten in 2011 with a five-pound marble ashtray by her ex-husband, Kay was left with one side of her face completely crushed. Devastated by the injuries, she sought the help of FACE to FACE, a humanitarian program from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) that offers free surgical care to women who are victims of domestic violence in the US.

The program placed Kay with Miami facial plastic surgeon Jeffrey Epstein, MD. “Emotionally she had moved on from the incident,” says Dr. Epstein. “She looked at death and made a huge recovery,” he says. However, despite the fact that Kay had received life-saving surgery and was “functional” by the time she came to Dr. Epstein, she still carried a significant amount of physical scarring from trauma that aesthetically, she wasn’t happy with. To address the issues, Dr. Epstein performed five procedures on her including a nose job (rhinoplasty) to rebuild the bridge of her nose and a full facelift, to help restore the volume of her face and create symmetry.

Kay is just one of the women who has regained her self-confidence and life through FACE to FACE’s charitable platform. If you or a loved one has been a victim of domestic abuse, there is aesthetic help out there. With AAFPRS members, who are specially trained in surgery of the head, neck, and face, women can receive pro-bono reconstructive surgery, helping them erase scars and rebuild their lives.
