Just like a facelift, a body lift can help you get the body you want when gravity, age and genetics get you down. A body lift can encompass multiple procedures or just one depending on the patient’s individual anatomy and what their goals are, says La Jolla, CA, plastic surgeon Robert Singer, MD. “The typical body lift usually involves a series of operations: a tightening of the facial and neck skin, arm tightening, breast uplift with implants, a tummy tuck, a lower body lift for tightening of the outer thigh and lower back skin and an inner thigh lift,” adds Encino, CA, plastic surgeon George Sanders, MD. The goal is to tighten areas with saggy skin and lack of elasticity by eliminating excess skin.
“The ideal candidate for a lower body lift is a patient who has usually undergone a significant amount of weight loss resulting in loose tissues/skin and fat around the buttocks, hips, posterior and anterior thighs,” says Newport Beach, CA, plastic surgeon Sanjay Grover, MD. The procedures can be done all at once or sequentially, but that depends on the extent of the surgery, the patient’s medical history and the comfort level of the surgeon. Additionally, the patient should be at a stable weight at the time of surgery.
The patient also needs to be realistic about their expectations as well as the pros and cons of the procedure including scarring, an extended downtime period and the amount of help they’ll need afterwards. “These are not simple procedures like an eyelift,” says Dr. Singer. “They’re more involved and require a longer recovery, but a vast amount patients are thrilled with the end-results.”
It’s also important to note that body lifts aren’t exclusively for those who’ve recently lost a significant amount of weight. They’re good for those that have lax skin due to genetics as well.
