Sometimes it’s a miracle that we can even work up the motivation to exercise, let alone have the energy to do it in the morning. But according to a recent study, if you’re looking to squash food cravings during the day, then an AM workout is your best bet.
During the study, a research team at Brigham Young University found that doing at least 45 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise in the morning decreased appetite. To get their findings, they gathered 35 women and measured their brain responses to images of food after a brisk walk on a treadmill for 45 minutes in the morning. They found that their reaction to the images decreased after the workout. The women also had to record their food consumption and activity for the rest of the day.
“This study provides evidence that exercise not only affects energy output, but it also may affect how people respond to food cues,” says study co-author Professor James LeCheminant. And that’s not all. The study found that when participants exercised in the morning, their overall daily activity also increased.
