According to a new study from the July issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, text messaging can be very beneficial for patients following breast reconstruction surgery by facilitating faster communication between the patient and doctor, thus boosting recovery time.

The study followed the recovery of two groups of women (102 total), who had undergone breast reconstruction surgery. While women in the non-texting group were attending routine follow-up appointments, women in the text messaging group were able to text their doctor every night to inform them about the amount of fluid output from their surgical drains. The doctor could then let them know whether it was time to come in for drain removal or whether to continue with standard care. This careful monitoring and communication helped reduce the number of office visits and healing time. In the first 30 days following surgery the women in the text messaging group visited the doctor 2.82 times versus 3.65 times for the group who didn’t use texting to communicate with their surgeons.
