Different surgeons use different techniques for suture placement. While many different barbed sutures are available, the only brand approved by the FDA specifically for cosmetic applications, like facelifts, is Contour Threads. These differ widely from another suture, APTOS threads, in the way they work, placement technique, and the outcome.
Most threads remain in the skin permanently and can only be removed surgically. Absorbable threads that are naturally absorbed within a year of insertion are being investigated for their potential advantages in suspension lifts.
