A diet that’s deficient in vitamins and minerals can have a detrimental impact on hair and nails. But in addition to eating a nutritious diet high in essential vitamins and minerals, you can take supplements designed specifically with your hair and nails in mind.
Hair and nails are both comprised of modified types of skin, so it’s no surprise that they have a similar response to certain vitamin and mineral supplements. Studies have shown that supplementation can significantly strengthen nails, making them less likely to chip or crack.
Look for supplements that contain biotin (vitamin B7), which is believed to increase nail thickness, and silicon, which provides elasticity and strength to both nails and hair. But keep in mind that it can often taken months to see improvement. As opposed to skin, which renews itself every month, hair and nails grow at a comparatively slower rate.
