Remember the sunscreen pill that had every freckled-face, fair-skinned woman of the world doing backflips on the beach? Well, the dermatologists of the world would like to offer a friendly reminder that the pill alone will not save you from skin cancer.
The American Academy of Dermatology recently released a statement “to alert consumers that these pills should not be used as a replacement for sunscreen or sun-protective clothing,” as “there is currently no scientific evidence that oral supplements alone can provide an adequate level of protection from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays.”
They continue to state that good old fashioned topical sunscreen is the only form of sun protection that is regulated by the FDA and that sunscreen, and only sunscreen, has been scientifically proven to prevent all the nasty effects of UV rays like sunburns, wrinkles, dark spots and cancer.
So, while it won’t hurt you to continue to keep guzzling down oral supplements for added protection, you still have to use SPF every morning.
