Summer Smile Strategies

We are finally just days away from the official start of summer on June 21st. Here at NewBeauty, we started welcoming the summer as soon as Memorial Day rolled around, and on our days off we continue to celebrate with cookouts and poolside refreshments. But NYC-based cosmetic dentists Jeff Golub-Evans, DDS, and Emanuel Layliev, DDS, remind us that with all the fun and yummy treats that fun in the sun can bring, it’s important we maintain our smiles this summer. Did you know that swimming in overly chlorinated pools can can demineralize and desiccate tooth surfaces by wearing away enamel and bonded restorations? And don’t forget about the effects of summer favorite foods on your smile:

BBQ Sauce. This condiment is a summertime staple and a great addition to almost anything coming off the grill, but its stickness can allow food to get trapped between teeth very easily. So remember to floss right after you eat.

Lemonade. It can be extremely refreshing on a hot day, but lemon juice contains acid, which can irritate gums and soften tooth enamel. The acidity in lemons can put you at risk for tooth erosion, a condition where the thin, protective layer of enamel slowly wears away from your teeth.

Blueberry Pie. Blueberries have tons of health benefits but they are also a primary culprit of tooth staining. Chase your slice with a glass of water or chose a slice of apple pie instead.

Salad Dressing. Several dressings use vinegar and sugar as main ingredients, which in excess, can lead to tooth decay. So make sure to check the label of your favorite dressings before topping your salads this summer.
