There are a host of reasons why you might be losing your hair. From genetics to poor nutrition, to hormone imbalances and even over-coloring, thinning hair is an all too common issue. So common, in fact, that women now make up 40 percent of the people that suffer from hair loss. What was once a man’s problem is now a very real concern for women across the country.

Understanding hair loss can be difficult. There are ways of course to combat thinning hair, but in the meantime you can also try styling tricks to make hair look thicker. First, consider getting a haircut. Shorter hair naturally looks fuller than longer hair. “Thin hair can look stylish, especially a short hair haircut which can help create the illusion of fullness,” says Farouk Systems creative artist Danielle Bucco-Regazzi. “When fine or thinning hair is left too long, it tends to look lifeless and flat—go for full volume with a stacked or multi-layered haircut.”

Styling products can also be really helpful in faking fullness. “Make sure to invest in a great mousse for blow-drying—pre-dry hair 85 percent using a small to medium-round brush and begin styling from the root area to maximize volume,” she says.

Another way to create the appearance of fuller hair is with hair dye. “Lighten up,” she says. “You don’t have to go blonde, [but] ask your stylist for simple accent highlights in the crown area. If your base color is darker, it will enhance thinning at the scalp area. Accent highlights will create depth and dimension because lighter hair levels tend to take the focus off thinning areas.”

Finally, clip-in extensions are also helpful. Watch this video to see how to get 16 different hairstyles with two clip-in hair extensions.
