In order to get rid of fat for good, it’s important to understand where fat comes from and how to prevent your body’s accumulation of it. We asked three specialists to explain the dos and don’ts when trying to keep your weight at a healthy level.

Food Plays a Critical Role
Los Angeles holistic nutritionist Kelly Leveque says that if you’re not eating the right foods, your blood sugar levels will not be properly regulated. “When you aren’t eating enough healthy protein and fat, your blood sugar can drop, causing you to crave carbs and sugary foods,” she says. “Consuming something like
a nonfat latte or a Kind bar doesn’t do anything but send you into a spike-and-crash pattern. You’re starving because you didn’t get enough protein, which makes you want to eat the first thing you see. It’s a hard habit to break, but it has to be broken.”

Eat To Achieve A Slightly Alkaline PH
Just as important as what you eat is how acidic or alkaline the food is. “All foods get broken down into an acidic or alkaline ash. The key is to not have too much of one or the other (you don’t want it to be acidic or too alkaline), but instead, create a healthy balance in your body. If your body is out of balance, eating healthy and working out won’t produce efficient results because the nutrients and vitamins you need from food can’t be adequately absorbed or utilized and your body won’t be able to properly reduce its toxic buildup,” says BAM! BAM! BODY’s organic health and wellness coach Natalie Cacciatore.

Reset Your Body
“It’s about getting rid of the toxins in your body and resetting your metabolism. We ingest toxins from everything, which build up in our bodies, making it hard to get the look we want, even if we workout and eat healthy,” Cacciatore says. “Detox your body in a safe way—prep for a cleanse by slowly removing toxic food, and then putting your body into an anabolic state by consuming a high level of protein so your muscles are activated and protected. This is achieved with the proper protocol that includes vegan protein and fruits and vegetables that are eaten, not juiced, for 10 days.” When considering a cleanse, it is important to discuss your expectations with your physician.

Get Your Hormone Levels Checked
While weight gain can’t totally be blamed on your hormones, there may be some connection to it, especially if your hormone levels are out of balance. “It’s not well understood, but weight gain in the lower half of the body tends to occur in women as they age. An alteration in the estrogen and testosterone levels that are related to menopause may contribute to the process,” says Duxbury, Massachusetts plastic surgeon Christine Hamori, MD.
