I’ve never been a big fan of body wraps—they mostly leave me feeling cold and sometimes a bit trapped. If a spa can be stressful, this is the ONE treatment that can somehow manage to make what should be a relaxing situation feel like being held hostage.

That’s why I wasn’t super excited to try the Personalized Ocean and Earth Wrap treatment at the Spa at the Mandarin Oriental D.C. [Insert sigh here.]

Upon arriving at the spa, however, I was pleased to quickly be transported to tranquility, which would be impossible not to experience given the design of the space. Realizing I had only minutes to spare before my treatment, I made a beeline for the steam room for a quick detox—always a divine way to begin to relax. Then off to my wrap, which began with an explanation of what’s to come.

Wishing for my beloved traditional massage, I obligingly got on the table ready for the treatment to begin. As a veteran spa-goer, I know all about the exfoliation and dry brushing, which often begins body treatments. While the results leave you with super baby-soft skin, I typically lean toward the enjoyment and well-needed relaxation that comes from the ever-classic massage.

Instantly though, I realized this treatment was different. The dry brushing that began the experience was akin to that of a soft massage and gently rocked me into a state of peace. After that I was covered in a warm mud and then wrapped up in a cocoon, to allow it all to work. While cooking in my cocoon, my head was treated to a moisturizing treatment and massage, which furthered my state of sleepy bliss.

Yes, I had to “move around a bit.” I needed to shower off all the mud and actually jump in the shower for not one (but two!) times to remove some other product that was put on my skin during the hour. But, despite all this activity, which I would normally find tiresome, the treatment was so skillfully delivered that I was able to maintain my mellow mood during the visit and long after.

Am I a wrap-convert? Maybe. Do I think the Mandarin makes it easy on those of us who don’t want to venture too far off the menu? Most definitely.
