While a little bit of soy here and there isn’t usually detrimental to your skin, overconsumption can be problematic. “Excessive amounts of soy can influence the body’s production of estrogen,” says Chico, CA, dermatologist Kafele Hodari, MD. Boston dermatologist Ranella Hirsch, MD, further explains that soy contains isoflavones that can mimic estrogens, and some experts believe that this may worsen breakouts.

When soy is the cause of breakouts, you’re likely to see large, nodular-like pimples on the bottom part of your face, often running along your jawline, on your chin or around your mouth. “Skin is an end organ of whatever you put into your body, and poor dietary choices can show,” says Dr. Hirsch. Try to cut out, or cut back on, your intake of soy in all forms including tofu, soy milk and soybeans.
If cutting back on soy doesn’t help the problem, you may require some medical advice. A dermatologist, who has a good understanding of your unique skin issues, may advise using prescription-strength cream, or even antibiotics, which may be just what your skin needs.
