Once again, we are reminded to not only watch what we eat, but to also watch what we drink. While it may be less obvious to stay clear of sweetened sodas and juices than candy and pastries, new reports released this week show that we are still drinking too many sweetened beverages.

About half of Americans are consuming too many calories from sugary drinks. That’s not to say that the other half aren’t drinking any sugary drinks but rather they are not consuming them every single day. According to the study, teenagers and young adults are the highest consumers of these types of beverages. Additionally, men drink more sugary drinks than women. So while men and young people may be the real consumers, it’s still important to pay attention to how many calories you are consuming through a straw. The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 450 calories from sweetened beverages a week Experts have found a correlation between excess sugar and obesity and diabetes.
