This Superfood Ingredient Is Popping Up Everywhere in Beauty

No longer are superfoods limited to just what you eat. It seems like on the back of nearly every beauty product is a laundry list of ingredients comprised of good-for-your-skin plant- and food-sourced extracts that do more for you beauty-wise than you ever could possibly imagine. The latest one we keep on hearing of: moringa seed, which is used both as an oil and extract. And even the experts have plenty of praise to give this tiny Indian pod, which resembles a seed. Chanel Jenae, cofounder of Arcona, says that moringa seed oil is unique in that it is ideal for dry and depleted skin, as well oily and congested skin (including acne-prone). “It has a rich antioxidant profile and contains more than 70 percent oleic acid, which helps nourish, replenish and restore the skin's protective barrier. It also contains all the necessary essential amino acids, so it is excellent both topically and internally. And, it’s rich in naturally occurring vitamin C, which is great for skin brightening.”

As good as it is for your skin, it’s just as good—and maybe even better—for your hair. In fact, Shu Uemura Art of Hair created its entire Urban Moisture line around the ingredient. Dale Ruby Moriarty, education manager for Shu Uemura Art of Hair, says, “Moringa extract has many great benefits for the hair including hydrating and purifying it. Known as the 'miracle tree,' it is highly concentrated in nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants that all work together to intensely hydrate the hair deep within strands, as well as purify the hair and scalp to capture pollutants.”
