Everyone knows the importance of taking their makeup off before bed; it’s probably one of the most basic skin care tips, right up there with making sure to always wear sunscreen and drink enough water. However, there have been quite a few celebrities in recent years who have admitted to wearing makeup at all times—yes, even to bed. Sometimes it’s out of laziness, and sometimes it’s an attempt to please their partner. Either way, it’s not something we recommend. Leaving aside the potential issues that could be behind the fear of letting your closest loved one see your bare face, it’s simply not good for your skin. Leaving makeup on overnight can clog pores and lead to breakouts and irritated skin.

Read on to find out which celebrities have admitted to never (or almost never) going makeup-free, but remember that this is one time you shouldn’t emulate a celebrity’s beauty habits.

Priscilla Presley recently revealed that she never once went makeup-free in front of Elvis during their six years of marriage. “[Elvis] taught me, even in having a relationship, about always having a mystique—never revealing everything. There are things you keep to yourself,” she said during an appearance on Loose Women. “Some can’t have the truth. I always had a little bit of makeup… Men don’t want to see what a woman has to go through to get where she is, they want to see the product, the result.”

Charlotte Tilbury has been very open about her refusal to let men see her without makeup. “I sleep in my makeup,” she admitted to Into The Gloss. “If I’m on my own, I won’t sleep in it, but my husband has never seen me without makeup. It comes off, and goes back on again. At night, I take everything off my face and moisturize—because you have to let your skin breathe a bit—but then I put everything right back on again: a little under-eye brightener… then the eye goes back on, and maybe a little tint on the cheeks. My mother said to me, ‘You always have to keep the mystery alive…’ I made the mistake of showing a boyfriend my un-made-up face once, and it was a big disaster. He was like, ‘What happened to your eyes?!’”

Kim Kardashian credited Charlotte Tilbury with passing the habit of sleeping with makeup on to her in a speech at the 2015 InStyle awards. “Charlotte Tilbury is my hero because she has never let her husband see her without makeup on,” she said. “She sleeps with her makeup on. She’s my idol. She’s inspired me when I am really lazy and I can’t do my makeup the next day, so I’ll sleep in my makeup. I know that’s probably the worst advice, but she has all the magic creams to put on the next day to make up for it.”

Scarlett Johansson is another celebrity who is dependent on makeup. “I always like to put a little bit of makeup on,” she said in 2011. “I’m not the kind of person who just slops around in sweatpants.” She added that she always keeps red lipstick on her person just in case because it’s “the cure-all for everything.”

Gwen Stefani told Harper’s Bazaar that she always wears makeup for her then-husband back in 2012. “I like to make my husband like me more and he likes it when I’m wearing makeup,” she said.
