Let’s face it: bedhead has never been cute, and those select celebs that have somehow found a way to make it chic are coveted around the world. Fortunately, there are ways to treat your hair overnight to wake up with a perfect mane. Follow these tips to get beautiful, effortless-looking hair with hardly any prep time.

Find a Texturizing Spray That Holds

Because the best way to work with overnight styles is to start with slightly damp hair, Fernando Salas, founder of White Sands Hair Care, suggests reaching for a leave-in spray with style memory (the longer it holds the style, the longer it will last come morning), adding that his White Sands Liquid Texture Firm ($20) is a great option that holds your style until your next shampoo. Another great option is the Shu Uemura Art of Hair Color Lustre Dry Cleaner ($39) that not only removes oil from hair, but also texturizes it while preserving color. Try Bumble & bumble’s Thickening Dryspun Finish ($31) for instant fullness and texture that will carry on ‘til morning.

Choose Your Style

From braids to curls, there are a variety of ways to style hair while you sleep. According to Salas, pin curls are an easy way to cut your styling time by up to 90 percent in the morning and still look like you spent hours on your hair. Naturally, we’re intrigued. After using your texturizing spray of choice all over your locks, Salas says to bring hair into a ponytail at the crown of your head, making sure the elastic isn’t too tight (opt for an Invisibobble; $8 for three) instead, which looks crazy, but doesn’t leave a single dent behind). “Taking 1–2 inch sections (the larger the section, the looser the wave), wrap hair around your fingers to create a curl and use a large bobby pin to secure each curl at the base of the ponytail.” Repeat until your whole head is pinned, and let sleep work its magic. When you wake up, Salas says to take out each curl, using your hands to loosely break up the waves, and spritz with a flexible hairspray like R+Co Outer Space Flexible Hairspray ($29).

Condition While You Sleep

When you’re short on time, one of the easiest ways to ensure you stick to a weekly deep conditioning treatment (Salas recommends this timeline) is to wear one while you slumber. “Your body’s natural heat will enhance the product’s performance so you don’t have to wait around sitting under a dryer,” Salas explains. Obviously, the key here is to do this with as little mess as possible, so try applying a shower cap, or if you’re really courageous, saran wrap, all over your hair to keep the moisture in and lock in heat. To make this step a little more glamourous, we love the trendy spin Shhhowercaps ($43), which put on the traditional shower cap without compromising function.

Pick the Right Products

Depending on your hair’s needs, there are products on the market that will treat it while you sleep. For weak hair, opt for Phyto’s Secret De Nuit ($40) that works to seriously hydrate and replenish dry and damaged hair while you snooze. For an overnight smoothing treatment, Alterna Bamboo Smooth PM Anti-Frizz Overnight Treatment ($25) smooths out hair while also creating a shield around each strand to block frizz come morning. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Night Cap Overnight Perfector ($28) is an all-in-one cure for unruly hair. Use it to boost shine, vibrancy and manageability overnight for results that will last for a week at a time.
