Sure, celebrities look perfect on the red carpet, in their Instagram selfies and even on the way to the grocery store. Their blemish-free skin, glistening smiles and glossy sleek locks are totally enviable. But just because they look flawless, doesn’t mean they are beauty experts.

Don’t get us wrong, celebs can sometimes give great beauty advice, but with all the good advice has come terrible advice too. Below are shocking beauty tips we found across the web from your favorite celebrities.

Keira Knightley

“I get a load of zits, and I’m always squeezing them in the bathroom mirror.” – ELLE

Beauty Editor Advice: We’ve all been in Keira’s shoes before, but it’s best to let your blemishes heal on their own. Instead, use a quick acne-fighting treatment on your blemishes like Clinique Gel-Lotion ($18) to zap your stubborn zits away.

Lady Gaga

When asked how many nights per week she goes to bed wearing makeup: “Seven. That is not good for your skin, but I’m blessed with good genes.” – People

Beauty Editor Advice: Not washing your makeup off can lead to wrinkles, unwanted blemishes and clogged pores. New York dermatologist Gary Goldenberg, MD advises washing your face at least twice daily, morning and night, to prevent bacteria and dead skin cells from clogging your pores.

Taylor Swift

“I was on a plane to Japan about two years ago and I had no makeup with me, so I went into the bathroom and used a Sharpie to line my eyes.” – Daily Makeover

Beauty Editor Advice: Ladies, if you want to rock a fierce wing tip, don’t opt for a permanent marker, which was clearly not made for this use. Instead, use one of our (totally safe) favorite liquid liners

Alessandra Ambrosio

Alessandra took her hate for split ends to a new level after posting an Instagram pic of her getting the Brazilian Treatment Velaterapia. The treatment involves twisting sections of hair and exposing them to an open, candle-lit flame.

Beauty Editor Advice: Clearly Alessandra didn’t get the memo that heat and healthy hair don’t mix. To safely remove those pesky split ends, opt for a haircut. “You definitely want to keep up with regular haircuts to maintain the shape of your cut and keep the ends fresh and healthy,” says hairstylist Thai Le of John Barrett Salon in Palm Beach, FL.

Jessica Simpson

The singer revealed that she brushes her teeth only about three times a week. “My teeth are so white and I don’t like them to feel too slippery, but I do use Listerine and floss every day, but I don’t brush them every day. I’ll use a shirt or something…I know it’s gross, but I always have fresh breath.” – The Ellen DeGeneres Show

Beauty Editor Advice: Keeping your mouth healthy and free of bacteria is vital if you want to show off those pearly whites. “Brush two to three times a day, including your tongue, and floss daily,” says New York cosmetic dentist Timothy Chase, DDS.

Karlie Kloss

“I don’t floss. I’ve always been told I should floss. Maybe that’s why I have so many cavities. – British Vogue

Beauty Editor Advice: Just like brushing, regular flossing is very important to protect your smile from gum disease. In fact, Staten Island, NY, cosmetic dentist Louis F. DeSantis, DDS,  says, “Brushing only cleans three out of five surfaces of a tooth. The area in between teeth is best cleaned with dental floss. Without flossing, it only takes 24 hours for bacterial colonies to set up between teeth and for gum disease to potentially begin.”
