Looking to hit refresh on your look this spring? A new haircut is just the thing. It seems movement, texture and volume are at the core of the current hair trends, and we’re here for it. We asked experts, some of whom are behind your favorite celeb chops, what trending haircuts we can expect to see everywhere this spring.

The Shag

“I’m really into the shag haircuts that are popping up, which elevate the previously popular butterfly and fox cuts,” says celebrity hairstylist Joseph Maine. “It’s an excellent twist on short hairstyles for spring, effortlessly suiting anyone with natural texture or wave.” He points to Renee Rapp’s shag done by Marissa Marino as “flawless.”

Professional hairstylist Sandra Petrut says to get this look, hair is molded to create an effortless haircut with an attitude, using razors or shears. “The style has lots of layers that are disconnected to achieve height on top and an elongated shape. The ends are choppy/textured, creating movement and face-framing, adding softness,” says Petrut. While the shag can be any length, Petrut notes that the longer it is, the more dramatic and rockstar chic it becomes.

Professional hairstylist Raven Hurtado agrees that the shag will be everywhere this season, following in the footsteps of the shaggy wolf cut that’s been trending. The layers, movement and volume give an edgy look, but it’s easy to maintain as it tends to look good air-dried with a texturizing product. She suggests using a product like Oribe Matte Waves Texture Lotion ($44) to scrunch hair or take sections and twirl for bend when it dries.

The Chop

“We’ve been seeing it more and more, but starting 2024 with a new fresh cut has been the trend of the season and what I think will be the trend of the year,” says celebrity hairstylist Jill Buck. “Celebs like Hailey Bieber, Zendaya, Julianne Hough and Jewel have all made the move. There is something so refreshing about cutting off old energy and unhealthy ends. I personally cut 14” off and love it!”

She knows shorter hair can feel harder to get creative with. Her pro tip: she loves showing her newly chopped clients how to add a faux bang. “It gives a fun, completely different look without the commitment,” she says. She recommends Halo Couture’s Bang for easy application.

French Girl Bangs

Bangs have been having a moment, and there seems to be no stopping them this spring. The French girl bangs, also known as Birkin bangs, can be worn with any hair length, allowing for the perfect face frame, says celebrity hairstylist Justin Toves-Vincilione. Plus, these bangs also look amazing when hair is worn up.

Bob or Lob With Side Swept Bangs

“What’s happening for spring haircuts is shoulder length hair or a long bob with side part swept over bangs, says professional hairstylist Artur Kirsh. To nail this look, “hair should be long enough that you can pull it up, and when you wear it down, it looks like a style. One side should be slightly longer than the other, very slightly.”

Kirsh says to get the look, hair should be cut dry with long layers, face-framing and swept over bangs. The stylist should take the client’s head shape, hair texture and other unique characteristics into consideration. “When you see it dry, you know exactly how to create an exclusive shape for each person. It’s all about the total look. Hair should match your personality,” he says.

Farrah Fawcett Layers

“For anyone wanting a full send into the 70s, this layered haircut is the ultimate retro but modern opportunity,” says Toves-Vincilione. “The haircut is highly layered and pairs beautifully with a bouncy blowout.”

Wispy Layers

Hurtado predicts that wispy layers will trend into spring 2024. “This cut looks good on a longer length of hair past the shoulders. It has face-framing layers around the face for softness and layers throughout the back with a little texturizing to remove weight and bulk to achieve movement and flow,” explains Hurtado.

She notes that it’s a great option for someone with medium to thick hair because the layers help achieve a lighter feel. “This cut looks great blown out with a round brush or using any airwrap tool.

The Hush Cut

The hush cut is all about layers and texture. This cut can be done on long or medium-length hair “and features multiple disconnections that frame the face,” says Toves-Vincilione. “Lots of texture is added by removing weight and bulk, creating a wispy and soft result while maintaining an edgy overall look.”
