"Anne [Hathaway] wore a black embellished gown. The look was elegant, but approachable. Our intention was for her to appear casually chic, so I decided to go with a beautiful deep rose lip. Our vision really came together: the beautiful gown, her Judy Garland inspired hair and her classical make up," says Chanel celebrity makeup artist Kate Lee.
Face: "I chose Chanel Perfection Lumière Long-Wear Flawless Fluid Sunscreen Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15. This foundation is opaque and gives a velvety effect," says Lee. "For this look I wanted to create a tactile effect and to bring a beautiful apricot hue to the apples of the cheeks to offset the lip colour. I used Jouer Mineral powder blush in Peach Bouquet."
Eyes: "On the eyes, I used Chanel Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Fauve to trace the socket and elongate the eye. Lashes were curled and given a generous coat of Chanel Inimitable Mascara in Noir. I added a few extra lashes. The lid and brow bone were nude with a touch of light concealer."
Lips: "This evening we decided to go for a colour that was a more intense version of her natural colour. Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Crème Lip Colour in Taffetas Rose is a deep rose/raspberry shade that is just a few shades more intense than her lips at their reddest."
Matin Maulawizada, global artistry director for Laura Mercier created a bold look to match Claire Danes’ dramatic black Givenchy dress.
Face: First, Maulawizada prepped Danes’ skin using Laura Mercier Foundation Primer to create an even canvas and ensure her makeup stayed flawless throughout the evening. Then, he applied Laura Mercier Repair Eye Serum generously over her cheekbones. Next, Maulawizada applied Laura Mercier Crème Smooth Foundation in Warm Ivory to lighten Danes’ complexion. On her cheeks, he applied Laura Mercier Crème Cheek Colour in Blaze followed by Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder in Translucent to set the look.
Eyes: Maulawizada defined Danes’ eyes by applying Laura Mercier Tightline Cake Eye Liner in Bleu Marine to her lash line. Then, he layered a combination of Laura Mercier Metallic Crème Eye Colour in Rose Gold and Laura Mercier Metallic Crème Eye Colour in Burnished Copper on her eyelids. Next, he applied Laura Mercier Shimmer Bloc in Golden Mosaic to further enhance the eyes. Maulawizada added the final touch by applying multiple coats of Laura Mercier Faux Lash Mascara to Danes’ upper lashes.
Lips: While she was getting her hair done, Maulawizada applied Laura Mercier Lip Silk to Danes’ lips to smooth and nourish them. He contoured and shaded the lips using Laura Mercier Lip Pencil in Coffee Bean followed by Laura Mercier Lip Pencil in Deep Wine.
“Elisabeth [Moss] and I wanted to keep the look down to earth with a chic French street touch,” says celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg.
Face: Greenberg applied mark Min-A-Real Cream-To-Powder Foundation all over her skin. Then she layered mark Touch & Glow Warm Glow Shimmer Cream Cubes All Over Face Palette onto her cheeks. She added a swipe of mark Just Pinched Instant Blush Tint in Cheeky to create a natural glow and set the look using mark Set Things Right Loose Powder.
Eyes: “I started by applying mark Please Hold Eye Primer to create a strong base. Next, I applied mark I-Mark Wet/Dry Eye Shadow in Luvstruck to the creases of Elisabeth’s eyes and blended mark Drama Case Eye Shadow and Liner Palette (black shade) onto her lash lines. Then, I used mark I-Mark Metallics Custom Pick Eye Shadow in Lava on her lids and finished the lash lines with mark What a Line Felt Tip Eyeliner in Twilight. I applied false eyelashes, embellished with two coats of mark Scanda-Lash Hook Up Mascara in Black Lash. Next, I filled in her lower lash lines using mark No Place to Run Longwear Eyeliner in Jet Set. I finished her eyes by applying one coat of mark Scanda-lash Hook Up Mascara in Black Lash on her bottom lashes.”
Lips: Greenberg used mark Lipclick Full Color Lipstick in Baby Luv on Moss’s lips for a sweet but sophisticated smile.
Julie Bowen’s sultry black leather dress was a perfect match for a subtle yet sexy cat eye and a soft, romantic pink lip. Makeup artist Heather Currie told us how to create the look.
Face: Currie kept Julie’s skin looking dewy and fresh by applying Avon Be Blushed Cheek Color in Powder Pink on the apples of her cheeks.
Eyes: Currie used Avon Irresistibly Sexy Eyeshadow Palette in Bombshell to bring depth and smokiness to Bowen’s eyes and added a little shimmer to pick up the glimmer of the jewels on her dress. The inner rims of Julie's eyes were lined with Avon Glimmersticks Eyeliner in Cosmic Brown, and the tops of her eyelids with Avon Ultra Luxury Eyeliner in Black. She then smudged the black liner into Bown’s eyeshadow to create a subtle cat eye and then finished the look with a few coats of Avon SuperExtend Extreme Mascara in Black
Lips: In order to create a romantic lip that would complete Julie’s look, Currie swiped two coats of Avon's Totally Kissable lipstick in Lovey Dovey on Julie’s lips. No gloss was used in order to keep the lip color soft and rich at the same time.
“[Michelle Dockery and I] wanted to do something modern and architectural with a nod to classic Hollywood glamour,” says celebrity makeup artist Jordan Long.
Face: I used Chanel Vitalumière Aqua Ultra-‐Light Skin Perfecting Sunscreen Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15 and applied it with the foundation brush. I then used a tiny bit of Chanel Correcteur Perfection Long-Lasting Concealer under the eyes and around the nose. For Michelle's cheeks, I lightly dusted Chanel Powder Blush in Frivole, keeping it concentrated at the apples. I then finished with Poudre Signée de Chanel Illuminating Powder to highlight her cheekbones, and a bit down her nose and above the bow of her lip.”
Eyes: “We were really set on doing a smoky eye this time, but we decided to give it a twist by using the gorgeous deep green in Chanel Quadra Eyeshadow in Lilium. With a domed eyeshadow brush, I applied the green shade all across her lid and blended it up. I also smudged it underneath the lower lashes. I then took the black matte shadow in Chanel Eyeshadow Duo in Gris-Subtil and intensified the smoke on the outer corners. To add a little sparkle right at the lashline, I smudged a bit of Chanel Illusion D'Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Illusoire. I finished with three coats of Le Volume de Chanel Mascara in Noir on the upper and lower lashes.”
Lips: “We smudged the gorgeous Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in L'Exquise and used it almost like a stain, with no liner.”
“Naomi [Watts] chose a platinum with silver embroidered overlay dress to wear to the SAG Awards. The soft color and delicate embroidery lent itself to a strong lip statement. We decided on an intense, matte, raspberry lip as the focal point. The eyes and skin were kept very soft with a soft flash of silver on the lid,” says celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff.
Face: With a foundation brush, Chanel Vitalumière Moisture-Rich Radiance Sunscreen Fluid Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15 was applied starting at the center of face and working toward the perimeter where needed only. Chanel Lift Lumière Smoothing and Rejuvenating Eye Contour Concealer was used to brighten the eye area. Blush was kept very minimal to allow the lip color to take focus. A small amount of Chanel Powder Blush in Star Dust was dusted on the top of the cheekbones to add a some sheen.
Eyes: “I first used Chanel Lift Lumière Smoothing and Rejuvenating Eye Contour Concealer on the lids to even the tone of lid. I then dusted Chanel Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Lily. On the center of lid, I added a flash of silver highlight with Chanel Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Infini. The inner rim was lined with Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Rose Platine to brighten the under eye whites of eyes. I curled the lashes and then applied Le Volume de Chanel Mascara in Noir on upper lashes only.”
Lips: “I used Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in La Sensuelle with Chanel Precision Lip Definer in Rouge Profond. I applied a stain of the lipstick first and then used a delicate touch of the lip pencil to sharpen edges with another coat of this vivid raspberry lipstick. The lip is rich in color and very lush and matte.”
Makeup artist Jo Baker was inspired by Naya Rivera’s sexy gown and retro waves. Baker’s makeup for Rivera was a modern take on old Hollywood glamour that complemented Naya’s powerful dress with a soft, fresh and feminine face.
Eyes: Baker lined the inner rims and lash lines of Rivera’s eyes with Avon Glimmersticks Eyeliner in Cosmic Brown, and smudged Avon Glimmersticks Diamonds Eyeliner into the outer edges to create a softly winged line. Baker completed the slightly metallic smoky eye by using a taupey shimmery brown shadow all over her eyelids, and by coating Naya’s lashes with Avon SuperExtend Mascara in Black.
Lips: Baker prepped the lips with Chanel Rouge Coco Baume to keep them soft and hydrated. In order to make Rivera’s lips look like they had just been kissed, Baker lined them with Chanel Lip Liner in #25 Pink Sugar, and applied Avon's Totally Kissable lipstick in Loving Lilac.
