Tinted Lip Balm
The supersheer L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Balm leaves lips swathed in moisture and a
faint vanilla scent. $8, ulta.com

The Pros
Tinted lip balms moisturize
and condition lips and enhance the natural color of your lips.

The Cons
The color doesn’t usually last very long, so reapplication is a must.

What The Makeup Artist Says

“The genius thing about tinted lip balms is that they are flattering, no matter the shade. They are also a great way to try bright or deep shades that can be more intimidating in saturated lipstick,” says celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff.

Lip Stain
Apply the lip stain
in Jane Iredale Lip Fixation Craze first, wait 30 seconds, then top with the gloss for long-
lasting color and a hint of shine. $30, shop.janeiredale.com

The Pros
These liquid, gel or cream tints leave a temporary water-resistant “stain” of color. Stains don’t bleed into the skin around your lips and they can be used on the cheeks.

The Cons
They can be drying (they often contain alcohol) and some are tricky to apply and remove.

What The Makeup Artist Says

“Some stains can cause a
blotchy look because the color grabs more in dry areas,” says celebrity makeup artist Vincent Longo. “To avoid this, start by moisturizing your lips. After you have applied the stain, and while it is still wet, blend the color in evenly with a lip brush.”

Lip Crayon
Perfect for getting a defined lip, color and a touch of hydration, Lipstick Queen Chinatown Glossy Pencil in Crime keeps lips soft and smooth with color
that won’t shift. $22, lipstickqueen.com

The Pros
Thicker than lip liner, crayons are like a liner and lipstick in one, and provide added definition. They can hydrate the lips and come in a variety of finishes.

The Cons
The more matte formulas can be drying.

What The Makeup Artist Says

“You can wear a crayon anytime you would wear lipstick. Its pencil form makes it less messy and gives better control,” says celebrity makeup artist Rea Ann Silva.

Lip Gloss
Best known for her luxurious and hard-working lip scrubs, Sara Happ debuts her new creation, The Pink Slip lip gloss. Wear it alone or layer it over your favorite lip liner or lipstick. $24, nordstrom.com

The Pros
These semi-thick-to-thick clear or colored formulas give a shiny, shimmery or glittery finish. Glosses can also create the
look of fuller lips.

The Cons
Some glosses are sticky; others don’t have the best staying power and may need to be reapplied often.

What The Makeup Artist Says

“When worn alone, lip gloss gives a sheer wash of color and a moist sheen. A thin veil of gloss layered over lipstick gives more of a vinyl finish and fuller center pout,” says Dubroff.

Lipstick
Perfect for both day and night, Tom Ford Lip Color in Nude Vanille has an ultraluxe, creamy texture that truly
commands attention. $49, neimanmarcus.com

The Pros
These wax-, oil- or emollient-based solid pigmented formulas deposit color in a multitude of finishes, colors and formulas for endless options.

The Cons
Lipstick often bleeds into lip lines. It may need to be reapplied, too.

What The Makeup Artist Says
“I love lipstick. To me it’s a very simple way to look glamorous,” says makeup artist Sabrina Bedrani.

Liquid Lipstick
Lush Emotional Brilliance Liquid Lips delivers a serious punch of pigment for long-lasting color and lips that feel smooth. $19, lushusa.com

The Pros
These long-lasting, fully saturated pigmented formulas go on like thick lip gloss for superrich color.

The Cons
Liquid lipsticks can bleed and feel heavy. They can also tend to be sticky.

What The Makeup Artist Say
“
Lip lacquers are like a coat of color with extreme shine. Although they give a sexy look, they are very messy,” says Silva.

How To Pull Off A Bold Lip
Many women are afraid to go bright on their lips, but it can make a statement. “Keep the rest of your makeup fairly natural with a light eye, mascara and a well-defined, bold lip,” says Bedrani. To do it, prep the lips with lip primer, line them with liner that’s the same shade as your lipstick and fill in your lips with the liner for definition. Load up a lip brush with lipstick or gloss and apply.

Plums
Berry and plum tones should have wine undertones, as opposed to black, which gives a “gothic” look.

Pinks
Stick with food-themed pink shades, like watermelon and pink frosting.

Reds
Reds can be tricky. You may need to try a few shades to find one that works with your skin, hair and eyes.

Nudes
Look for one with blush, peach or pink. It shouldn’t match your skin color or have any gray tones.
