“Skinny pancakes” sounds like an oxymoron to me, but judging by the social media buzz surrounding this new type of flapjack, it’s anything but. According to DailyMail, British brand The Skinny Caffe is creating quite a stir with bloggers and consumers alike on Instagram thanks to its new Skinny Pancakes and Skinny Syrup, both of which have sold out three times since they launched a week ago.

We reached out to the brand to find out what makes this breakfast treat so craveable. “Our pancakes are high in protein, have no added sugar and contain just 55 calories each, and intaking a lower amount of calories is known to help increase weight loss,” says James Whiting, director of The Skinny Caffe. “Our pancakes have sold out very fast, and our customers are using them as a breakfast, as well as a healthier ‘cheat’ snack, too. Combined with our zero-calorie Skinny Syrups, our customers are in for a real treat, as they have already commented how they taste as good as ‘real American pancakes,’ which is amazing to hear!”
One bag of mix costs $12 and makes 15 pancakes, and at just 55 calories each compared to the 143 you’ll find in a standard pancake made with mix, it’s understandable while calorie-counters are jumping for joy. The syrups, which come in both maple and vanilla flavors, are priced at $7 each and also sugar-free.
Another reason for the social buzz is that these products have become quite a hit with the Slimming World community (a popular UK weight-loss company now available in the U.S.), as each pancake only accounts for 0.5 “syns” on the brand’s diet plan.

When we asked celebrity nutritionist Brigitte Zeitlin for her opinion on the new pancakes, she told us that although they are a low-calorie alternative to traditional versions, the term “healthy” is subjective. “They don’t seem inherently unhealthy, but they should be eaten in moderation. As far as the syrup goes, it’s calorie- and “sugar”-free, but it’s chemically based, using additives, flavorings and artificial sweeteners. For this reason, you’re probably better off using a little bit of the real stuff instead.”
The brand offers free shipping worldwide, and although the pancakes and syrups are currently sold out, Whiting says they are taking backorders, which will start shipping October 2.
Plus, Whiting tells us there are more new products coming down the pipeline. “We have lots of new products coming soon that will be exciting and different from what we currently offer, one of which is a low-calorie, indulgent rocky road brownie that will launch later this year.”
