While there’s been controversy lately that skin care is a scam (it’s not), last year’s beauty industry sales certainly reflect that the majority of people just don’t agree with that sentiment. According to findings from the consumer and retail research firm NPD Group, it appears that skin care sales increased by 9 percent in the United States last year, with the beauty industry growing by 6 percent (reaching $17.7 billion) overall.
Unsurprisingly, skin care is one of the most popular sectors of the beauty industry, with the category contributing to 45 percent of the industry’s total profits. But within the skin care category, the product type that saw the most growth in sales wasn’t cleansers or serums. In fact, it was face masks that grew in sales by a whopping 32 percent in 2017. Exfoliators took second place, with sales growing by 12 percent, followed by cleansers and facial moisturizers (up 6 and 7 percent respectively).
Even though skin care had such a successful year, makeup still topped the chart as the beauty industry’s largest category, with sales for face primers up by 17 percent and eye shadows rising by 13 percent. With such a surprising growth rate last year, we can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store for the beauty industry.
