Everyone has makeup essentials and lifesaving hacks that they can’t (and won’t!) part with, but if the same old routine and habits have become boring or uninspiring, chances are you may find yourself in a bit of a beauty rut.
But before you panic or begin to question your beauty choices altogether, know that most beauty ruts (you know, wearing the same shade/brand of lipstick for xx years) are reversible, you just have to be willing to change things up a bit first. To shake up your routine for the better, here are five telltale signs you may be in need of a beauty tuneup.
You Use the Same Lipstick Over and Over
You may have a lip gloss or hairspray that you trust with your life, but using the same products over and over again can be one big beauty red flag. Swiping on that same shade of lipstick can make your overall look appear dated, making you want to think twice about ordering that lipstick that’s about to be discontinued.
To fix this surprisingly common beauty blunder, try changing your makeup shades every so often. Doing so can keep your look current, and prevent you from looking like you’re stuck in a time warp.
“There is a difference between having a look or being consistent and being unchanging,”says Christine Perkins, owner of Pyara Spa + Salon. “Every season you should change shades up slightly so that you don’t feel that loss so significantly!”
You Can Do Your Makeup Look in Your Sleep
Thick mascara and bold pink lips may be your signature beauty look, but if you find that it’s one routine you know off the back of your hand, chances are you may be stuck in your ways a little too much. To get out of this beauty trap, celebrity makeup artist Ramy Gafni says the solution is simple. Instead of trying out a new look altogether, she suggests adding small yet noticeable changes to help your look pop.
“If your makeup routine is so predictable, you could do it while you’re asleep, breathe some new life into your beauty process by waking up five minutes earlier and trying a new look at least once a week,” says Gafni, author of How To Fake Real Beauty. “Change can be easy to apply, but dramatic, like adding a bold eye shadow to center of eyelids or retexturizing your look.”

Your Skin Lacks Radiance
Even your skin care routine can reflect a beauty rut, especially if your complexion is looking dull or lackluster. To bring a dewy glow back to your complexion, putting different products into rotation may do the trick.
“You always want your skin to have a lit-from-within glow, so if you’re not feeling radiant, it’s time to switch up your routine,” explains skin coach Katie Hitchcock of Skin Authority. “Make sure you are resurfacing on a daily basis—look for a serum with 10 to 15 percent glycolic acid that you can use nightly. It’s like a daily peel—minus the peeling—and also helps with anti-aging.”
Your Stylist Isn’t Challenging You to Change Anything
You may be extra particular about the way you style your hair, but if you’ve been getting the same chop and highlights without any protest from your stylist, perhaps it’s time to get a second opinion elsewhere.
“In terms of cut and or color, you know you’re in a beauty rut when your stylist hasn’t encouraged you to change up your length, style or color in a while,” says GLAMSQUAD creative director, Giovanni Vaccaro. “Your stylist should be engaged and excited about changing up your look to keep your hair healthy and fresh.”

You Are Resistant to Change
Whether it’s dated lipcolor or blah highlights, it’s crucial to recognize that most beauty ruts stem from a fear of change. Now, no one is telling you to drastically change your look overnight, but instead of resisting change altogether, try taking baby steps (trying new eye shadow or lipstick colors) to incorporate some easy changes into your routine.
“The reason you are in a rut is probably because you’re afraid of change,” says Lisa Abbey, CEO and founder of Flygirl Beauty Brand. “Embrace it instead—your stylist is full of great new ideas; take the time to listen and consider trying. If you need to take baby steps that’s fine, add just a few highlights or a bang the first time; you can get bolder from there.”
