It has become a newsworthy argument: Should Hillary Clinton consider going under the knife if she is serious about a presidential nomination? Recent articles have me wondering: If it’s now culturally “acceptable” for a movie star to get a breast augmentation, nose job or facelift, shouldn’t it be equally acceptable for a famed politician to do the same?
In a nation where the Hill seems more and more like the Hollywood hills, it’s no wonder candidates and their families are being scrutinized for their looks. After all, politicians are celebrities, which leaves them open to the same tabloid fodder typically reserved for stars like Kim Kardashian and Lindsay Lohan.
But back to Hillary. If she does have some work done in a run for the candidacy, she wouldn’t be the first woman in politics to want a fresher-looking face. In 1978, former first lady Betty Ford boldly proclaimed to the world that she had a facelift. Elizabeth and Bob Dole are rumored to have undergone numerous procedures and even former Speaker of The House Nancy Pelosi looks to have a newly tightened face. So would someone fault Hillary for doing the same? We applauded when she finally ditched the hair clips and scrunchies, should we also warmly embrace a nip and a tuck?
I, for one, feel torn. It’s no doubt that plastic surgery has become more widely accepted and embraced by Hollywood and housewives alike. Last year ten million Americans spent $11 billion on cosmetic enhancements, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). However, when it comes to leaders of the free world, I cringe to think they need a facelift for a fighting chance. Especially considering that Hillary would be our first female president. And if she did in fact win in 2016 at 69 years old, it should be for her intelligence, authenticity and domestic and foreign policy. Not because she looks 45. Then again, if Hillary was actually considering plastic surgery, doesn’t she deserve the chance to fight for what she believes in and look her best?
Weigh in! Do you think female politicians should have work done?
