Despite body odor topping almost everyone’s list of offensive attributes, some people simply aren’t aware of their foul fragrance-or they just don’t care. But is B.O. a big enough affront to warrant legal action?
Last week, Honolulu’s city council considered a ban on bad-smelling commuters, with a bill that could lead to a $500 fine or even six months in jail if a person was convicted of riding a city bus while being too stinky. The anti-B.O. bill proposed making it illegal to ride while emitting “odors that unreasonably disturb others or interfere with their use of the transit system.”
Out of 68 commitee members, only nine voted in favor of the bill.
“We think that is going to be very difficult to enforce,” Honolulu Police Department Maj. William Chur said of the unsuccessful proposal. “The question of odors is a question that is somewhat subjective.”
