In Europe, CryoLife’s BioGlue, a surgical adhesive, has received a CE Mark (indicating the product has met European health, safety and environmental requirements) for use in browlifts and reconstructive plastic surgery. It would replace the sutures, staples, bone tunnels and/or screws that are used to suspend the lifted tissue and muscle in certain facial rejuvenation procedures, leading to shorter recovery periods.
With the use of BioGlue, plastic surgeons can literally glue tissue and muscle, skipping invasive suspension apparatuses altogether. Most internal glues don’t have the tensile strength that BioGlue does, and plastic surgeons have been looking for one that’s strong enough to replace these invasive products. The glue is dropped into the incision point with a syringe and held in place for about a minute, saving time in the operating room. It also makes for a safer option with a better recovery.
BioGlue is currently used in the U.S. for cardiac procedures, but has yet to be given the green light for cosmetic purposes.
