Shea butter is used in hundreds, if not thousands, of skincare products and cosmetics because of its proven moisturizing benefits. But until now, being an excellent emollient is about all it could offer.
Swedish company AarhusKarlshamn has found a way to harness the anti-aging abilities of this popular nut extract. The new ingredient, called Lipex Shea Tris, has been molecularly distilled to increase its levels of triterpene esters. Raw shea butter is made up of about 4% of this anti-inflammatory compound, whereas Lipex Shea Tris boasts 50%.
Experts consider inflammation one of the main culprits behind aging and disease.
AarhusKarlshamn also notes that this new ingredient is lighter than regular shea butter, making it more appropriate for facial formulas.
