We usually tune into James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke for a no-fail dose of entertainment, but last night’s episode with Selena Gomez gave us a little extra health lesson too.
In between belting out hits (alternating between the front seat of a car and roller coaster cart), Corden asks Gomez: “Is it true that you drink a shot of ginger every morning?” Gomez replies, “I like ginger shots, yes—but I actually like to eat a piece of ginger every morning.”

“Noooo,” Corden says. “Doesn’t it burn your throat?”
“It’s a good burn,” answers Gomez, before both her and Corden both take massive shots of ginger juice. Judging from Gomez’s nonplussed reaction, it’s safe to assume, she’s used to it. “It’s killing all the bad things inside,” she laughs.
“Ginger, one of the oldest spices in the world, is well-known for its ability to alleviate symptoms of gastrointestinal distress. It contains zingibain, a protein digestive enzyme, and is therefore particularly effective at reducing bloating and distress caused by protein and rich foods,” explains nutritionist Paula Simpson.
Adds nutritionist Cynthia Pasquella, “If what Selena means by ‘it kills all the bad stuff’ is that ginger fights bacteria, reduces inflammation, and can lower blood cholesterol—then she’s right on the money! Ginger has been shown in both scientific studies and eastern medicine to improve bone health, boost weight loss, aid in digestion, and even boost your libido! I always recommend talking with your doctor before adding any supplements into your diet, even though it’s fairly safe to experiment with a morning ginger shot or tea. Just watch out for minor side-effects like gas, bloating, or heartburn and scale back as needed.”
“There are also some studies that show ginger offers antibacterial properties,” says Simpson. “The chemical constituents vary among fresh, semi-dry, and dry forms of ginger. Fresh ginger is easy and effective. It can be juiced or added to salad dressings, smoothies and many cooking dishes.”
