In addition to its intoxicating scent and sought-after status, rose has been continually recognized for its medicinal and beautifying powers. Since ancient times, this vitamin C-packed plant has been used for its antibacterial and antiseptic characteristics, as well as for cell regeneration, hydration and skin healing.

However, the majority of beauty products that incorporate rose don’t contain the actual flower, but rather rose essential oil, rose water or rose hip oil, which comes from the pods that remain once the petals fall away.

Here’s how to use each extract to your advantage:

Produced through steam distillation using fresh damask rose petals, rose water contains pure rose oil. Usually free of artificial ingredients, rose water can be found in facial cleansers and toners, and is especially beneficial for acne-prone and irritated skin types because of its antibacterial properties and its ability to hydrate and balance the skin.

One of the most costly and feminine essential oils, rose essential oil, extracted from the petals, gives the skin a radiant glow. Known as rose otto in its purest form, rose essential oil also aids in digestion and is believed to fight depression.

Deep within the fruit of the rose lies the berrylike rose hip. Rich in antioxidant vitamins A, D and E, rose hip has been proven to be an excellent hydrator, which is why it’s often prescribed for those with mature skin. Rose hip oil is also contains tretinoin, a derivative of vitamin A used in retinol-based products.
