Everyone loves a good funny-girl makeover story. It’s a trope that Rebel Wilson has experienced both on and off screen, and although she’s recently undergone a significant lifestyle change that has led to a major weight loss, she says her transformation has been just as much internal as external.

After taking some time to get healthier, Wilson says sharing her journey on social media has been motivating. When it comes to public scrutiny, she adds that while she can relate to Jonah Hill’s response to the media’s focus on his body, she also feels in some ways it’s helped her stay on track. “I mean firstly, I love Jonah Hill. When I first came to America I kind of pitched myself as the female version of Jonah Hill and we have the same agent. I did see that comment on social media and thought, well with me I kind of put my year of health on Instagram publicly. I did it partly for accountability because I wanted that accountability,” she explains. “I didn’t know how that was going to go, but then I’ve received such overwhelmingly positive responses. Whether it’s on social media or in real life, someone will always feel the need to comment about your body. But overall, it’s been so positive so it hasn’t really been an issue for me but I totally get what he’s saying. I also know on my end I’ve kind of put it out there publicly, so it’s probably a little bit different.” She says the headlines don’t bother her as long as her body is not the only focus. “While I did lose a lot of weight last year, hopefully people get used to it and the conversation moves more towards the awesome movies coming out this year.”

In Netflix’s upcoming #SeniorYear, she plays an 18-year-old cheerleader who goes into a coma after falling off the pyramid, only to wake up 20 years later. “She has the mentality of a teenage cheerleader, but at almost 40 she decides to go back to high school to redo her senior year.” Revisiting that teenage mindset was really fun, says Wilson, but now that she’s older and has learned from the positive changes she’s made, the 41-year-old comedic actress has acquired some useful wellness tips to pass along.

The Advice I’d Give My Younger Self

“This is your journey and all the things that happen to you, happen for a reason you might not see right away. When I was younger, I would say ‘I want to be a famous actress in Hollywood movies, like now!’ By the time I was 21, I was so disappointed that it didn’t happen. I would get a bit impatient with things but then you learn that when it’s your time, it’s your time. Life is happening for you, so try to learn the lessons along the way.”

Three Things I Do Now That Make the Biggest Difference

“I’ve been eating a lot less, so I’m really into my OLLY supplements. They’re yummy, so they’re kind of like a treat but with all the daily nutrients I need for the day. I also walk for about 60 minutes a day. Last year when I was trying to actively lose weight, I was doing hardcore exercise, but you don’t need to kill yourself to be healthy, you just need to move. I listen to a podcast or an audio book while I’m doing it, and it’s so good for your circulation and peace of mind. Thirdly, good sleep! I take my OLLY Sleep gummies to get in my eight hours because it’s so good for your body. As women we work our asses off all the time, so it’s important to get that quality sleep.”

“Now that I’m a lot healthier, there are some things, like jet lag, that don’t happen as much. I also have a lot less inflammation, which I used to think was normal.”

My Favorite Treatment

“I’m Australian and love the sun, but I’m so fair that I also get a lot of sun damage. Once a year, I’ll do an IPL or some type of resurfacing laser to get the sunspots and any little things that pop up. I love beauty creams, but when it comes to actual change, lasers really do the job.”

My Trick for Staying Centered

“Gwyneth Paltrow’s doctor, Dr. Habib Sadeghi, taught me this thing called Purge Emotional Writing. For 12 straight minutes you write out your feelings to cleanse your emotions like your body cleanses itself of food and toxins. You can’t let things sit and stew, you’ve got to process them. It really helped me with my emotional eating or when I’m feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Afterward, you rip it up or burn it so no one else can read it. It’s just for you.”

My Favorite Way to Relax

“I’m obsessive about bubble baths, maybe because I’m a Pisces, but I love water. A bubble bath with Epsom salts and trashy reality TV like the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Below Deck Mediterranean, or HGTV shows like Tarek and Christina. Oh and My Big Fat Fabulous Life! I love that show.”

The Trend I Can’t Live Without

“SNS Nails Dip Powder. My go-to shade is nude with a tip, which I’ve seen on a lot of other actresses lately, too. So I’m totally on trend.”
