The almighty ponytail: a childhood favorite and an adult conundrum. For women past their 30s, it’s not always easy to get away with a hairstyle that most reserve for the gym or when it’s time to do a weekly clay face mask. So how do you make the ultimate in casual hairstyling look polished, and even, dare we say it, elegant?
It is possible. Ponytails have had quite the red carpet revival in the last few years, and for good reason. They are a quick and playful way to get your hair up and out of your face…which might explain why everyone is wearing them to elegant events. From Cate Blanchett (seen here wearing a low ponytail at the Met Costume Institute Gala-the showcase of couture style for the Hollywood elite) to Kate Beckinsale (our Spring-Summer 2012 cover model).
So what’s the easiest way to add some class to an old casual standby? To create this look, start by adding some mousse to wet hair, blowdry with a round brush to create volume, then backcomb the hair around your crown to add more height. Then, gently comb hair back and spritz with a light-hold hairspray over the top. To finish it off, pop on one of our new favorite finds-Hair Braceletz ($10).
Is it a bracelet or is it hair tie? Who cares, it makes your ponytail look less like you rushed out the door in the morning after a spritz of dry shampoo. Wrapping it around your ponytail quickly makes the style look a bit dressier. While they come in a several different colors, the black with white crystals is probably the safest and best bet.
