If you wish your hair had more volume, you’re not alone. But you’re not out of luck, either. Hairspray and teasing were once the ultimate volumizers, but today, the range of volumizing products is endless. While they never fell to the wayside, Chris Megia, stylist for Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon in Los Angeles, says there’s been a resurgence, because “most women want big, sexy hair.”
When shopping for a volumizer, make sure you’re getting a product right for your hair type; each hair type responds differently. Finer hair works best with gel-based volumizers because “they don’t weigh the hair down,” says Megia. Foams and mousses also work well.
If you have medium to thick hair, try a spray. “Since sprays are a bit stronger, they give more volume, and you can concentrate more of the product at the root without worrying about weighing hair down,” Megia says.
