The new Blow Dry Lounge by PHYTO opened at the Fred Segal Salon in Santa Monica, CA, this week offering $35 blowouts for beach-goers and celebrities alike. As a beauty editor (and just a woman in general)-already knowing how much better I look and feel with the voluminous, bouncy hair only a professional blow-dry seems to offer, I was excited to have the lounge a mere minutes away from my desk. Lunch break blowout? Sure, why not.

But what I didn’t expect (or was prepared to be jazzed about) is that PHYTO Hair Care, known for its extremely high concentrations of active botanical extracts from France, which they infuse into their line of products, is providing scalp analysis along with specified treatments pre-blowdry. Sure I’ve had my skin analyzed, put under a microscope, pricked and prodded, but never have I had an intense examination of my scalp. After all, why would I care about what my scalp looks like, it’s covered in hair.

After an extremely close look at my scalp through a microscope camera (scary), it turns out that of course, I haven’t been properly taking care of it. I have buildup that’s suffocating my strands and causing the all-too-familiar oily scalp and dry ends situation. “But I use clarifying shampoo!” I protested upon seeing the unmistakable white residue smothering my roots. Sandy St. John, Regional Educator for PHYTO, gently explained that while I might think I deserve an A+ for my diligent clarifying routine, I really need to be exfoliating my scalp.

Many products-especially those that contain silicone and synthetic ingredients to help smooth down the cuticle-leave residue or buildup on the hair and scalp, which combined with hair coloring and heat styling, leave it more vulnerable to dryness, oiliness and irritation. “Many women are suffering hair loss because of all this,” said St. John. And the solution might just be proper exfoliation. You give the due diligence to your face for very good reason, but your scalp needs to shed dead skin cells and bacteria too.

Under a microscope, you should be able to see the red blood vessels of your scalp, she advises. This means your hair can breath and the natural oils produced in the skin can make their way to the ends of your strands in order to prevent dryness and breakage. Basically, take care of your scalp and beautiful, more moisturized and strong hair will grow out of it.

My prescription from the analysis? Massage in PHYTO Phytopolleine Universal Elixir Scalp Stimulant ($32) twice a week with my fingertips before bed to purify the scalp and catalyze microcirculation.

Now, I’m ready for my blowout please and thank you.
