We constantly hear about the benefits of a high-fiber diet. We’ve even seen it added to our children’s sugary Fruit Loops in an effort to boost daily intake. That’s because when we eat fiber, it not only helps our waistline (allowing us to feel fuller for longer so we don’t overeat), but it also protects our heart as it lowers blood cholesterol levels. Another benefit, perhaps one less talked about, is a beauty boosting one-fiber’s effect on our skin.
That’s right. Fiber intake is important to the health of your skin as it helps your body eliminate toxins and waste in your body. If your digestive system is sluggish, the toxins and waste may be expelled through the skin (think clogged pores), causing acne.
Since The American Dietetic Association reports that most Americans don’t even come close to the recommended daily intake of fiber (20 to 35 grams of fiber a day), our lack of fiber might just show up on our face. That means it’s time to load up on fiber-rich foods. To do that, always chose whole grains, eat beans as they offer more fiber than most plant foods, load up on fruits and veggies, and sneak in fiber supplements whenever possible, which you can do pretty easily and deliciously. I really like Sneaky Pete’s, a new soluble oat beverage that’s refreshing and, with as much fiber as an entire bowl of oatmeal, is a low calorie way to meet the daily requirement.
