Maintaining pristine skin is no easy feat—especially after months in the sun. While all those days spent outside this summer may have left your skin glowing, they’ve also left you with a peppering of hyperpigmentation, hard-to-treat body acne and plenty of other beauty problems. So, in an effort to discover the easiest ways to beat these common skin issues, we sought the help of Riverside, CT, dermatologist, Mitchell Ross, MD, for his expert advice.

A light dusting of sun-induced freckles might have been cute when you were younger, but now after years in the sun, they’ve probably just turned into large, unsightly splotches of discoloration. In order to get rid of that hyperpigmentation once and for all, Dr. Ross recommends an in-office procedure. “After a tan has faded, a laser is the best method to treat sunspots, also known as seborrheic keratosis,” he explains.
“Once the skin is sunburned, skin cells are damaged and dying,” says Dr. Ross. “There is no treatment to bring them back to life, and the peeling process is actually protective as it removes genetically damaged cells from the body.” So, in order to treat sunburn and mitigate peeling, simply apply moisturizer every day and wear sunscreen so the skin has a chance to recover before another sunburn comes along. “Aloe can also help cool and soothe the skin and can be used with the moisturizer,” adds Dr. Ross.
No surprise here, but the sun breaks down collagen in the skin, causing it to lose elasticity and sag. “Ultherapy treatments and a good moisturizer are great ways to improve sagging skin,” says Dr. Ross. Summertime inner-thigh rub can be beyond painful, but luckily, it’s easy to fix. “In general, moisturizers or an anti-fungal cream like Lotromin Cream ($13) work for chafing,” says Dr. Ross. Make sure you clean the area with water and only apply products to the affected skin when it’s dry. With proper attention, the chafing should heal rather fast.
Scorching summer temperatures will cause you to sweat everywhere, making your body more susceptible to acne during those warmer months. Use a body wash containing salicylic acid to help clear up any visible zits and exfoliate regularly in order to remove those dead skin cells that are clogging the pores. If that’s not doing the trick, Dr. Ross recommends seeing your doctor for a stronger solution: “Oral antibiotics are an appropriate treatment modality for significant acne on the trunk.”
